Introduction

Our pre-master's courses are designed to get you on to your master's degree. You will specialise in an academic area of your choice and you will take degree-level modules to greatly improve your subject knowledge. You will also improve your study skills and use of academic English - the essential skills you will need for your master's course.

A two-semester diploma and one-semester certificate are available. You can also combine your pre-master's with your master's degree in a single course, requiring just one visa and one application.

Course content

The course consists of compulsory language and study skills modules, together with subject specialisation modules.

The compuslory modules are designed to improve your language and academic skills to the level required for postgraduate study in three main areas.

• Reading and Research
• Academic Writing
• Seminar Skills

The subject specialism module(s) will improve your knowledge of the field you wish to study in the future, and allows you to gain experience of studying at a British university. You can choose your subject modules from a wide range of options from the university's modular programme. Your choice could include business, tourism and leisure, law, social sciences, arts, humanities, computing, technology, the built environment, life sciences, health and social care.

Progression

The diploma and certificate are recognised qualifications in its own right. Most students who complete the course go on to study a master's degree at Oxford Brookes or other British universities.

Master’s courses at Oxford Brookes can be offered as a two-year programme. The first year consists of the Pre-Master’s Diploma. You then transfer to the appropriate school in the second year to study your chosen master’s degree (MA/MSc). Your place on the master's course is guaranteed provided you pass the Pre-Master’s at the appropriate level.

Pre-Master's Diploma

• Starts: September or January
• Entry level: IELTS score of 5.5 (with 5.5 in all skills) or equivalent
• Academic requirements: Honours degree, acceptable diploma or equivalent work experience.

 Pre-Master's Certificate

• Starts: January or June
• Entry level: IELTS 6.0 (with 5.5 in Reading/Listening/Speaking and 6.0 in Writing) or equivalent
• Academic requirements: Honours degree, acceptable diploma or equivalent work experience.
