At a glance

Become a confident teacher of the English language on this course. It is suitable for UK and international graduates with no or limited teaching experience. This course covers teaching the English language in international settings, and includes a research project that gives you specialist knowledge of English language teaching.

From 16/17 we are now able to offer UK and international MA TESOL students who meet the language requirements, the opportunity  to prepare for the additional internationally recognised EL teaching qualification, the Trinity College Certificate in TESOL as part of their year here at SHU. Having this extra qualification alongside the MA TESOL  will greatly enhance employability as English language teachers in the UK, EU and internationally .

About this course

The course is for UK and International graduates with no or limited professional teaching experience who plan to follow or develop a career in English language teaching.

The course develops your professional skills as an informed, inquiring and confident teacher through reflective engagement with your learning and teaching over the year.

You gain critical and reflective understanding of English language classroom practice and research skills. The course draws on and incorporates international settings, allowing you to experience and evaluate a range of teaching and assessment methods. This prepares you for teaching in your home country or across the globe.

You develop your skills in

• critically evaluating areas of theory and practice in English language teaching

• applying knowledge to lesson planning and developing learning materials for a range of learners

• developing and evaluating research instruments and data analysis

• reflecting critically on your development as a teacher and classroom researcher

• completing a research project in a topic of your choice

While studying, you produce a portfolio of assignments, lesson plans, materials and a development plan, all of which will be a useful resource for future employment and professional development.
