Course Overview
This course aims to focus specifically on improving your use of English in the classroom. It is a highly practical course which will increase your confidence and help to maximise the amount of English spoken in your classroom. The course will focus on key areas like giving instructions and feedback, eliciting, conveying and clarifying meaning, leading classroom discussions and facilitating speaking activities. It will also help you to be more confident in worksheet and materials design, including designing language development resources. After this course you will have improved your own language ability and have practical strategies to improve your language ability independently once you return to your classroom
Who is the course suitable for?
This course is aimed at English teachers and teachers teaching subjects through English who need to be able to communicate coherently in English. The course focuses on the language needed to be able to run classes effectively and efficiently.

What will the course include?
As a course participant, you will receive a pre-course questionnaire, which should be returned prior to the course. This is to ensure that the areas of most relevance to you are integrated into the course content. Throughout the course you will be invited to reflect on your own professional practices.
In addition to developing your language skills, the course will include content drawn from some or all of the following areas, depending on your contextual and personal needs and priorities:

  • Giving effective instructions
  • Explaining meaning
  • Eliciting
  • Giving effective feedback
  • Praise
  • Discipline
  • Explaining difficult concepts clearly
  • Describing classroom processes
  • Managing classroom dynamics
  • Engaging in professional discussions
  • Writing effective worksheets

 

An integral part of the course will be reflecting on how you are learning and identifyingteaching strategies that you can adapt to your own classroom situation.

How long is the course?
The 50-hour course provision includes intensive tuition by trainers who are experts in the fields
of language, materials and methodology, as well as opportunities for reading and research and
guest lectures from well-known figures in the field of ELT.
Classes are held from Monday to Friday and take place as detailed in the course-specific
timetable but always within the hours 0915 – 1715.

What approach is used?
Classes will be practical and ‘hands-on’ but with reference to relevant theory.
The course includes intensive tuition by trainers who are experts in the fields of language,
materials and methodology, as well as opportunities for reading and research and guest
lectures from well-known figures in the field of ELT.

Facilities and resources
NILE course participants have free access to an extensive ELT library and a modern suite of
computers with a broadband Internet link. The NILE course venues have a wireless (Wi-Fi)
environment. Each course has a Moodle online learning environment where course materials
and views of course participants can be shared digitally. This is kept active for at least six
months beyond the course so you can keep in touch with your fellow course participants.
