Other Information

This 8-unit course is for all teachers who use materials or produce their own. These may be materials for your own classroom, for sharing with colleagues or even for publication. They may be print or digital. You will explore many aspects of effective materials development from key principles to practicalities. The course is also for those students on the NILE Master’s in Professional Development for Language

Education who have chosen the elective module in Materials Development, and these MA participants will have extension resources and activities throughout the unit content, as well as individual tutorial opportunities.

Course details
In the first unit you will get to know the course, the learning platform, your tutor and other participants and start to consider the relationship between teaching, learning and materials. In the next six units you will explore materials development in terms of learner needs, routes to language development, texts, levels of challenge, and design. You will receive input on these areas through a variety of means, will have plenty of opportunity to discuss your own opinions and experience and will also do practical tasks to allow you to practise what you have learnt and receive feedback. Many of the practical tasks will be related to your own teaching context so you can use them with your own learners. To ensure your materials are as effective and principled as possible, you will also have the opportunity to explore and articulate your own beliefs about language teaching, learning and materials through building up a personal record which you add to and adjust as you progress through the course. Materials for the four skills as well as vocabulary and grammar  will be addressed, in both print and digital forms.
In unit 8 you will review the course and prepare for your final assignment, a choice of assessed products for open-enrolment course participants, and the assessment requirements of the MA module for those on the Master’s programme.
